Who doesn’t want longer, fuller hair? Well, some of us may not necessarily want longer hair but I have never heard anyone say – I wish my hair was thin and flat! It is one of those – said no one ever – situations. So – I am here to share with you guys some of my favorite tips I have learned over the years that have either worked for me personally or worked for my clients over the many years I did hair.
1. Use Products to Achieve Fullness Daily
Whether your hair is thinning, your looking for an anti aging solution or just some extra fullness – Women’s ROGAINE® Foam can help. Beginning the use of ROGAINE® at early signs of thinning, as part of a proactive anti-aging regimen. Left untreated, hair thinning can worsen over time; women can lose one-sixth of their hair density in a period of 10 years. Unlike cosmetic thickeners which just coat hair and temporarily mask the issue, Women’s ROGAINE® 5% Minoxidil Topical Aerosol helps prevent further thinning by regrowing fuller, thicker hair. The best part is it is so easy to apply it will become part of your everyday morning or night routine! Find a coupon for your ROGAINE® here.
2. Exercise
No – I am not the biggest fan either. But unfortunately we don’t keep our tiny little youthful bodies forever and our heart and muscles start to age – sooooo – we all have to do it (or at least should). I am not going to lie to you guys and say I work out all the time because my husband knows this is NOT true. But I do try to stay active. Playing basketball with the kids, bike rides, going on walks, or even yard work keeps me sweating and moving. How does exercising help your hair? It encourages blood flow which takes more blood to your scalp encouraging your hair to grow.
3. Avoid Salt Water and Chlorine
Seems obvious – but in the summer – especially in Florida – it is much harder than you think to keep your head out of that water because ya’ll – it is HOT! So, your at the pool or beach with your kids and you want to go under or they just really enjoy splashing you because they like to see you scream?
Well here is my little trick – think of your hair as a sponge – if a sponge is dripping wet it can no longer absorb new water, unlike a dry or damp sponge which soaks the water right now. Rinse off in the shower that is most likely right beside the pool, or take a water bottle and pour it on your head before jumping in. This way your hair has already absorbed clean water vs chlorine or salt water!
4. Use Less Heat
Seems a little obvious right? We all are guilty of it – needing our hair to dry quickly, or throw in a few curls before heading out the door? During the week when you do not have any major plans or even the weekend if you are laying low – take your showers at night. This way you can braid your wet hair before bed (or twist it into Princess Leia buns) and wake up with pretty little waves!
Here is a little trick – I like to split my hair into 4 sections and put my hair in 4 small buns to keep my roots straight but my ends curly!
5. Dust instead of Trim
This is for my girls who want to channel the Little Mermaid with their long locks. Just because it has been 6 weeks it doesn’t mean you need a trim. ESPECIALLY if you are practicing all of these other tips from this post. Super long hair can even go 12 weeks without a trim as long as you are not applying too much heat. And when you go in – have your stylist “dust” your ends vs trimming them. By dusting I am talking 1/2 a cm here people – do not let her get scissor happy on those gorgeous locks you have been working on growing out!
6. Eat Healthy
Seems obvious in all aspects of our life but really it does help your hair, nails and skin to grow, have a glow and re create itself over and over – wish is awesome for aging as well. So what does ‘eating healthy’ really mean. Yes, I LOVEEEE my chocolate – but I eat dark chocolate at all times unless it is my occasional kit kat which I still just can’t let got of. Luckily for me I love salmon but if you do not, to get your fatty acids in, try nuts, avocados, pumpkin seeds, etc. google has a full list ;). Spinach, kale, and any dark leafy green gives you the iron, folate, beta carotene and vitamin c. Sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, carrots and more contain beta carotene.
Some of you may be wondering what this beta carotene is. It is an antioxidant that our bodies turn into Vitamin A.
Basically anything that gives you protein, vitamins a, b and c, fatty acids and beta carotene – EAT IT!
7. Brush/Massage Your Scalp
Brushing and Massaging your scalp not only feels amazing but it also does a little of what exercising does for your scalp – too bad it won’t work for the rest of our bodies – but it stimulates blood to your scalp increasing hair growth!! So at night before you go to bed – ask your hunnie for a scalp rub or pull out your brush and start counting 1 . 2 . 3 . – 100.
8. Wash Your Hair Less
Repeat after me – you do not need to wash your hair every day! No – I do not care if you run marathons or do cross fit. Your hair doesn’t need washing every single day! That is what dry shampoo is for – and by golly I go through cans and cans of this stuff! So hold off on the shampoos! The most you should be washing your hair is every other day – and that is the most! So in that case – don’t jump in the ocean or pool until day 2 at least ;)!
