Hello Ladies. So I am going to kinda of share my “hair story” with you guys today. I am going to start off by telling you a little about how I “know my stuff.” This part of the story is by no means to brag, it is simply just to let you guys know I have heard, tried, seen and been taught it all and well, I know what works and what doesn’t. I started doing back in 2006 and worked my hinny off 8-12 hours a day for 7-8 years. I trained yearly in NYC and traveled to Las Vegas, Ohio, Texas and all over NC to train as well. I was certified in more hair services than some of you may know exist.
So, I have to tell you guys a quick story, and in the world of beauty, a horror story. In hair school, I had long blonde hair when I started, I decided to die my hair brown for “fun” and ended up not feeling like myself so I was determined to get back to blonde ASAP. Keep in mind, we had no clue what we were doing and we were doing my hair at home, while watching American Idol and basically just not really paying attention. My girlfriend foiled my ENTIRE head, yes epic fail at that point already, and by the time she got to the bottom of my head my hair was falling out and breaking off in the foils on the top. Well I of course broke out in major tears and I had blonde hair alright but I also had a short little bob the next day that one of our instructors had to cut! So, super sad at the time but pretty funny when I look back. Needless to say, my hair has been all sorts of styles, colors, and every type of damage you can think of. So, while I do recommend you having your hair done by a licensed professional, when you at home you need to be spoiling your hair.
Okay, on to the hair tips you guys have been waiting for….
Use a great shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. For color treated hair I am LOVING the New Dove Hair Regenerative Nourishment Shampoo, Conditioner and especially the Serum in Oil for my ends! I found it at Target a few weeks ago and have been addicted! First of all it smells amazing, but that aside, it works so well. In just the first wash I noticed a difference and with every shampoo it is getting better and better. Next time you are at Target, grab the new Dove Hair Regenerative Nourishment Shampoo, Conditioner and Serum in Oil. Your hair will thank you!
Don’t mix and match your shampoo and conditioner. Kinda like bread and butter, they go together. Your shampoo is prepping your hair for what ever your conditioner has in it. They are married, don’t separate them!
Only shampoo from your roots to mid shaft. By only washing your roots, and basically where the oil is saves your ends. I only run shampoo through my ends once every two weeks or so. Your ends will get clean just by the shampoo running through and the water, promise!
Only apply conditioner from mid shaft to ends. There is no need to put conditioner at your roots, your scalp does the moisturizing for that area and you are just adding more “grease to the fire” at that point. Put conditioner just throw your ends to moisturize and detangle where your natural oils don’t reach.
Be gentle to your hair when it is wet. Your hair is at it’s most vulnerable state when its wet. Start combing through hair at the ends with a wide tooth comb or a brush designed for wet hair. If you start at the roots – wet or dry – and start combing through tangles it scrunches all the tangles together towards the end of your hair and is a lot harder to get out and more damaging.
Don’t wash your hair everyday. We hear this all the time but once your in the shower it is just easier to get your hair wet too, well don’t. Your scalp needs time to produce oil and let it flow through your hair. If you are constantly washing your hair not only will it get dried out but your scalp will also start over producing oil and your hair will get “greasy” much quicker.
Eat your veggies. Greens and healthy fats such as avocados and organic olive oil are not only good for your insides but also your hair and skin!!
Rinse conditioner out with cool water. Now, I have to be honest with you, I RARELY do this only because I am a huge whimp when it comes to being cold and I am not the type of person to “inflict pain” on myself. Okay, maybe I am being a little dramatic but if you can stand it, rinse your conditioner out with cool water to seal the cuticle and add shine.
If you are a swimmer or spend a lot of time in the chlorine with your kiddos, apply your conditioner before getting in the pool. This provides a conditioning barrier that not only moisturizes but keeps your hair from soaking in the chlorine.
Keep transforming your hair in the ways that make you feel your most beautiful using Dove Regenerative Nourishment Collection for perfectly nourished hair that’s 100% visibly damage free. As most of you know, I wear extensions a lot of the time for fullness and to add about 3 inches to my length. My hair has been all lengths tho and even with my shorter locks Dove was there for me. Scroll down to the bottom of the post to see a throwback hair pic! Dove Hair hopes you will celebrate and remember every cut, color, style and transformation fondly – without having to fear hair damage.
